Considered to be the smallest incorporated city in the Dallas County, Texas, Wilmer originally began as the settlement Andrew K. Gray named Prairie Valley until the trains rolled in from Houston in 1872. In 1884, Prairie Valley was renamed to Wilmer in honor of A.J. Wilmer, a conductor in the Houston and Central Railroad line. There were only a hundred residents in the 1890s, but at the outbreak of World War I, the town’s population grew to around 200. During the Second World War, the population reached 450. In 1960, Wilmer’s population increased threefold to 1,785. As of 2013, around 3,800 people were living in the city.
Currently, the city is home to the terminus station of Dallas Intermodal line of Union Pacific Railroad, a freight haul company. Wilmer could be found at Interstate 45 just next to the town of Hutchins.
